FLORIDA OYSTER AQUACULTURE TRAINING PROGRAM

The purpose of this program is to introduce prospective students to the world of aquaculture. There are three levels of training. Students can choose one, or all.

Level 1 – Farm Technician. This level is to train individuals to become technicians on a farm. The hired work. Students will learn the ins and outs of working on a farm, how to manipulate and maintain equipment, how to rotate, harvest, and process the product, problem solve, as well as how to handle a boat safely. This level will require 200 hours as an intern on a working farm.
Level 2 – Farm Manager. This level is to train individuals to manage an aquaculture farm. It covers much of the same for the Technician level but also includes how to develop a disaster and HACCP plans, how to complete and submit a permit for the farm, as well as how to manage employees. This level will require 400 hours as an intern on a working farm.
Level 3 – Farm Owner. This level is to help the individual become an owner of their own farm. In addition to the requirements for the other levels, the farm owner program will cover a lesson on developing a business plan. This level will require 200 hours as an intern on a working farm.
